There are certainly desires by some parties to move #1 and #5 into the engine house. That situation is complex.

The site and the artifacts are (I believe) owned by the Quincy Hoist Association. Their primary goal is preservation of the mine site as a whole, which includes the Nordberg steam hoist and the #2 shaft house. Grant money restored the engine house, where #6 is housed, and there are 4 tracks indoors. So the indoor space exists. #1 and #5 were placed "out back" by the hoist in the 70s. (1975?) They've received some paint and they've gotten restored cabs, but site interpretation and attendance centers around the hoist and shaft house, so visibility is better in context with the surface plant. Similarly the few remaining rock cars. There is a long line of trucks by the engine house that used to be under rock cars - they still were lined up along the edge of the hill in the 80s but they've become mulch long since.

The additional complexity to all this is this is one of the primary sites for the Keeweenaw National Historical Sites/Park. Unique to the National Park Service, NPS doesn't actually own much of anything but tries to keep a loose 'confederation' of locations glued together with a bit of interpretation and occasional grant money when they can swing it. So they have a voice in how items are displayed, but don't own anything.

Like so many things, if someone coughed up the money it might get a lot smoother to do that.
