On November 10, 1967, engine 493 was leading the day's second turn from Chama to Cumbres past the west portal of the snow shed. 493 would shortly combine the two sections of the train and run to Alamosa while helper 476 would run ahead of the train as light engine. In 1967 the snow shed was still intact, but this part of the shed was torn down. Luckily the dismantling work was stopped just in time to save the reduced section that still exists today.
