Formally known as the Governors Special, the train had about 2 weeks advance notice. My wife and I rode the train representing the Silverton Standard and most of the other invited guests had some related interest in area newspapers, radio stations, etc. It was supposed to be for the governors and the media. We rode in one of the gons and stood for the whole trip. There was a band and a good sized crowd as we arrived in Chama plus food for the passengers. I'll have to dig out my slides of the trip which included a staged hold up of the train by horsemen. And I spent yesterday supervising work near Mancos on the RGS, so the passion and interest continues 50 years later.
