Denver Daily Times, 12/23/1873, p2: The D&RG is changing all of their short freight cars into coal cars, and when the work is completed they will have 51 long freight cars and 54 coal cars and the latter will give them a daily carrying capacity of 100 tons.
Note that this is in the winter and they need all the coal cars they can find to bring the coal up from Canon City. No doubt that with the coming of fair weather there is a chance that many were returned to flat car service.
