Being a live and well member of "NG Youth", I've questioned how I've gotten into trains many times... The only historical relation I have in my primarily Californian family was my great grandfather Putt who was a UP Brakeman, and there's a chance I had a great uncle far back in my family who came to SW Colorado and rode the San Juan Express.
My parents weren't necessarily interested but supported my interest, as I've had it as far back as I can remember, and I mostly progressed into it more by myself as I grew and matured more. Living 20 minutes away from the D&S probably has something to do with it as well. Starting them young is definitely a key factor, but I believe there may be more to it than that. There are my 2 cents.
