I have been reminded that I didn't quite finish the story about the Draft Board and the Air Force OTS that resulted from NOT chasing 497 on the Farmington branch on December 7, 1967. After I started working at Hanford with my defense deferment on December 18, I didn't hear anything from the Air Force for several months. Finally near the end of March I received a message from the Air Force recruiter that they only had openings for Aeronautical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Pilot Trainees, and he suggested that I should enlist as an Airman, and when my commission came through I could transfer to Officer Training School. I most happily passed on that 4 year "opportunity". Almost at the same time I was called for a pre-induction physical by the Selective Service. Although I had a defense deferment, I had to go and make the best of it, and ended up with a wonderful train excursion. The physical was scheduled for Thursday, March 21 in Spokane. So on Wednesday evening I took the NORTH COAST LIMITED from Pasco to Spokane. The night was spent at the Ridpath Hotel. Sleep was difficult, because all night long there were glass beer bottles crashing into the central court yard, tossed out of room windows by the hundred or so other potential inductees scheduled for their physicals. After the morning exam I boarded the WESTERN STAR for a scenic ride to Seattle via Wenatchee. The following morning I took the Great Northern train to Portland, and then rode the SP&S section of the EMPIRE BUILDER along the Columbia River back to Pasco. That circle rail adventure happily finished my involvement with the military - all because of driving home after leaving 493 and her train at Los Pinos on December 6.
