Re: More USA in Newfoundland in WWII

Apparently most of the new locomotives, rolling stock, relay rail and etc for the recommended improvements was supplied by the USA, with the Nfld Rly contributing the labor. Much of this equipment and material would have been provided under the Lend-Lease agreement, but I don’t know if cash ever exchanged hands. Certainly nothing was ever returned.....

The USA even built their own branch line to the Stephenville Airforce Base (the largest base not on USA soil). This branch, plus the base itself, were still used by the USA well after the war. They were turned over to the Canadian government in 1966, by which time Nfld had joined as a province of Canada. Fort Pepperrell wasn’t closed until 1961, and the major Argentia Naval Air Station wasn’t closed until 1994. I guess by then the USA figured us Canadians weren’t going to invade them, so it was safe to let the bases go. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Cheers,
Ralph
