Seeing that huge loose rock over Kurt's shoulder makes me reflexively turn away, expecting that rock to come down any second. I climbed into the tunnel from the west portal in August 1966, but the stone arch at the entry looked like it would stay put. I didn't go in very far as I didn't have a flashlight and the opening wasn't big enough to let in much light. Afterwards I had to pour the water out of my boots as about a foot of water had backed up against the rubble pile covering most of the tunnel opening. Seeing those (moldy) redwood timbers still holding up the roof was impressive, but I
definitely can't claim that my perspective was as dramatic as in this photo
