I am sad to report that Doug Frederick passed away last night due to long term health problems. Doug was a long time narrow gauge railroad fan who, while working as an over the road truck driver, made it a point to visit as many narrow gauge railroads all over the country as he could. When he became unable to work due to health reasons he moved to Chama to be near one of his favorite railroads and so he could work with the Friends of the C&TS. Doug was the "tool repair guy" in Chama for the Friends and the "gofer" and parts runner for several years during work sessions. He spent many hours in his corner of the Chama wood shop repairing tools, chain saws, generators and whatever else needed fixing. He was known for his generosity and good humor.
I met Doug in the summer of 2015 when I returned to Chama and needed a place to live. He welcomed me into his home and gave me a room for several months until I found my own house. We became close friends and spent much time talking about railroads, chasing trains, and exploring obscure parts of the C&TS.
He will be missed
