Mining in Ny Alesund proceeded sporadically, interrupted by wars, difficult working conditions, and particularly by a number of disastrous methane gas explosions. There were a half dozen coal mining locations, and production ran in the order of 120,000 tons per year. Trucks took over in 1959 until final mine closure in 1962 after another deadly explosion.
