The Chase? Antonito to Osier

I planned my trip to Chama (now Antonito) and Durango with the plan of riding and chasing. Previously I've only chased from Chama, but since that isn't an option, I'd like to chase from Antonito. How passable are the mountain roads that crisscross the line, can I get to them with a regular vehicle, one with a basic 4x4 or do I need something beefier? How many times could I realistically catch it?
With the Durango & Silverton, how many chasing opportunities would I actually have since it doesn't Depart from Durango or go to Silverton?
I'm kind of sad that I still won't get to ride behind 463.
