SG - Flagstaff Lumber Company - Anderson Mesa Incline

July 10, 2020 05:44PM
This hike is from back in September of 2014. I had been out on a C&C trip with Dave Peterson and the gang and was returning back home to AZ with another day off. I decided to tackle the Anderson Mesa Incline in the morning before heading down out of the high country.

The Flagstaff Lumber Company built this incline in 1907 to gain about 500 feet in elevation to get to timber up on Anderson Mesa. A network of tracks were built up on the mesa and a Shay shuffled log cars to and from the incline. A steam powered winch was used on the incline. About a year after construction the Shay took a mad dash down the incline and was destroyed. The incline was abandoned after this incident.

Images from my hike have been linked into the map and can be viewed by clicking the yellow squares. Press the Anderson Incline button below the map to zoom in to this segment. I'll be adding a line to the northwest up on top of the mesa next.

Some of my favorite images from the hike.

A stick of rail near the base of the incline.

The occasional tie sighting.

This view is very similar to a period photo with the steam donkey being pulled up the grade.

The remains of a rock and wood drainage box.

The remains of a rock wall.
