Nice, Eric -
IMHO the open space at the top considerably improves both the legibility and the æsthetic appeal of the 'A'.
While I quite agree with CR BT Dispr (below) that the painting of historical pieces should be as faithful to the original as possible, I also agree with those to whom legibility – and artistic "balance" – are important, and suggest that these be considered especially by the model builders among us who have given fanciful names to their model railroads — even if never actually constructed, or to mythical prototypes such as the Fiddletown & Copperopolis.* While its pretty obvious why the letter 'O' in your set doesn't have serifs, and why they're minimal or partly omitted on the 'G' and on the 'N' as compared to the 'H', it's harder for me to accept the original 'A' – especially if it's to be used as the leading Capital – as it just seems too lightweight.– One compromise might be to reduce the serifs
at the top of the 'A' to half the width of the serifs on the 'H', along with "pinching" it,. Here's what I mean

* Or the 'Durango, Trout Lake & Telluride', a proposed line To Hell You {could} Ride with trackage rights on the D&RG(W) from Durango to Rockwood, then taking off from the tail of the wye, climbing along the hills west of El Rio de las Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio past Electra Lake and the current location of the Purgatory Ski Area to Cascade Creek, along said creek to just below the waterfall, and then following the natural contours southwest of the falls and Engineer Peak until diving under SlideRock Ridge through a 3/4 mile tunnel, and finally running roughly west-northwest to a connection with the original route of the RGS at the tail of the wye at the summit of Lizard Head Pass
