I have sort of a photographic memory of where things are located (and where I'm at while hiking them). I try to take enough photos that I can tell a narrated story and readers can get a sense of where I'm at and the adventure in exploring these old railroad grades. There are some things I find that I either don't divulge or don't tell exactly where they are (such as this rail) as I don't want to see the artifacts in the woods pilfered.
The Forest Service has been made aware of the rail's existence. We'll see what happens next. I'm not sure what museum would want it, but the Forest Service does have a logging interpretive display at the Nelder Grove of Sequoia. That might be the best place for it...
