Here's a map I drew of the top of the Little Sandy Incline:
One last set of photos. While out exploring the woods for more railroad grades I came across this rail:
This rail was built by the Waugh Steel Works of Belleville, IL. I had never heard of this company. Doing a little research I discovered they were originally the Bogey Nail Works and made square nails in Belleville, IL. James Waugh purchased the company and in 1890 began to make steel rail. Due to limited water supply the rail production was a failure and they stopped producing rail in 1893.
I've got a strong hunch that this rail was originally used in the Madera Flume and Trading Company's Soquel Mill railroad operation of 1889-1897. This is the railroad where "Betsy" was first used.
It is probably the only Waugh Steel Works rail still in existence...
More to post after my next day of exploration....
