These are wonderful photos, Ralph. Thank you for sharing them.

What is immediately apparent to me is the strong Scottish influence in Canada's 19th-century development, visible just in the names of the engines. I also now see the significance of your profile photo!

Avonside was well known for its experimental locomotive designs and was the major builder of double Fairlies, including Festiniog 0-4-4-0 James Spooner built in 1872 alongside the TG&B 0-6-6-0s. (Vulcan Foundry was also building Fairlies at the same time, including the D&RG Mountaineer of 1873.)
