I believe the 0471 water car was being used with the 493 due to the fact that the log loading took over 4 hours for an 8 car train. The 493 had to stay with the train to move it for the loaders. The log trains are now using the 1203 diesel. The 493 had the 0471 on the Thursday train, but the water line was not connected. The 493 stopped for water at Tank Creek northbound and Needleton southbound, so the water car is not needed for a run to Silverton. The train Thursday was a test of the 493's oil consumption. The passenger cars were empty (except for Mr. Harper, his Silverton guests, some D&S staff, and me) so the 0471 was along to add weight for the test.

As you can see from the photos, the 0471 was connected to the 493 with flexible connections. The 0471 has been used with other engines in the past....with 473 a number of times.
