Periodically, there is discussion here of re-creating the San Juan passenger train on the C&TS. This was also the subject of our first editorial at Railway Preservation News, and this may be found at the link below. The photos are lousy, and the technical aspects a bit crude at that early point in our website, but the thought and questions are there, though things have happened since 1998 when it was written.
With this in mind, I'd like to start a discussion of what it would really take to authentically re-create the San Juan of days gone by... We know where the cars went, but what about the smaller details? What happened to the reclining seats from the vestibule coaches, and the swiveling seats from the parlor cars? If they're gone, might suitable replacements be found from other SG cars that have been gutted for dinner train or other service? Basically, how much have the cars changed since 1951 and what would it take to put them back to their former condition? Also, what would it take to re-create an older San Juan from say, the 1910s or 1920s? As nearly every detail of the D&RGW NG has been recorded somewhere, this seems a do-able research project.
