I suspect visiting Skagway in the '70's was similar to visiting Durango in the "60's; a lot left from the past and seemingly not a lot to look forward to. I had less than a day there and my friend was not into railroads. The railroad was pretty quiet...
The Sumpter Valley folks had repatriated their #'s 19 and 20, other locos had gone. The only steam visible at first was #195 which in 1979 looked a lot better:
