In 1959 I joined the Air Force and attended the Air Force photo school in Denver. After I graduated I was often assigned to work with Air Force newspaper and magazine writers. The writer was always in charge which really bothered me as most had no training in visual literacy. They always looked at photos as secondary to their writing. I had started college to major in history. In a short time I determined that I could write as well as any of the writers, so I changed my major to journalism. Got a BA from U of Maryland. I have considered myself to be a photojournalist. Some in the media are of the persuasion that it is either words or photos. I think the best story telling is both.
Not everyone can be a good writer, but not everyone can be a good photographer either. Both take work and learning.
