Timothy, reminds me of my hours with Frank Wright, D&RGW retired engineer. Frank worked D&RGW from 1914 to 1970 on both the narrow gauge and standard gauge. He worked with Lou Lathrop. Lathrop's book "Little Engines and Big Men" was one that got me started in the 50s on a life long love of the D&RGW. I asked Frank about Lathrop's books, were they true. Frank responded that it was all true, but some was exaggerated and Lathrop sometimes put himself in stories that were actually some one else. After that I still loved to reread the books every few years, just knew the story was true even if the writer was not always honest.
We all approach photography and writing differently. I have been out on charters or train chasing where the person with me questioned where I wanted to stand, why are you shooting from there? I responded that we see things differently and thank God for it. I did a number of chases and shoots with Ernie Robart and we seldom stood side by side....Ernie was a mountain goat (like Olaf). I had a bad ankle from Vietnam and could not climb up the sides of the mountains, so we had different photos of the same event.
