Section crew reductions on the narrow gauge

May 19, 2020 04:39PM
It seems like this has probably been discussed here before, but I can't find it. And I can't find it in any of my books. Sorry.

Comparing the 1919 valuation maps with the 1938 Branch Line Report for the Santa Fe branch, about half the section crews were discontinued:

Antonito
Palmilla - discontinued
No Agua
Serviletta - replaced by Taos Junction
Barranca - discontinued
Embudo
Alcalde - discontinued
Espanola
Jacona Section House - discontinued
Santa Fe

I assume this was a system-wide change and not limited to the Chili Line. Does anyone know when and why this happened? Also, were the section & bunk houses removed?

I'm curious how this impacted the entire narrow gauge, not just a single branch.
