Well, I'm not Earl but my understanding is that the pipe boom resulted in far more cars arriving than the trackage at Farmington was designed to handle. Add that to some of the tracks that *were* there being poorly laid out and it was possible for a crew to wind up "trapped" on some track and unable to move.
Since D&RGW didn't actually want the traffic, it was keeping them from abandoning the narrow gauge according to plan, there wasn't any drive (or money allocated) to add/rearrange tracks either.
So, all and all, a mess.
