Little off topic, but on the subject of D&RGW ng trains at night. In the case of the third division, the primary traffic was the CF&I coal mine at Crested Butte. Crested Butte branch trains went up in the morning, came back in the afternoon where a crew would be waiting to take the loads over Marshall Pass that night. Next day the coal loads could be transferred on the barrel in daytime. During WWII, the D&RGW installed a lighting system on the barrel transfer so loads could be transferred at night. Monarch branch limestone was then transferred at night and Crested Butte coal would be transferred during daylight the next day. During the war, the barrel worked almost 24 hours a day. Frank Wright, my D&RGW engineer friend, normally worked the Crested Butte branch during the day, but a few times he worked helpers over Marshall Pass and he said it was a real bear being rear helper on the pass at 20 below.
