I remember that as well.....

Once No. 40 came over from Central City and we were able to get a water tap with the Silver Plume water system (a spicket and garden hose), we could gradually fill the 40's tender and use it as a water tank. When we stopped, with the 2 locomotives adjacent to each other, we used the water pump to fill the tender from the 40's tender. A lot easier than packing that pump on and off the locomotive and down to the creek and back again.
