Coxo Revisited.....

February 15, 2004 05:27PM
A couple weeks back we had a discussion about the why's and wherefore's of Coxo Siding. I finally got in contact with someone who was there (Mr Eldon Morgan) asked him what recalled.
Indeed they did stage some meets with the passenger train there. Frieghts tended to ball up the yard and mainline at Cumbres while switching, so they tried to get the passenger through before a frieght came along. If it was the westbound passenger, a Cumbres Turn would wait on the main at Coxo and line the passenger into the siding. Once the freight was by and in the clear, the passenger would continue, with little delay.
Eastbound passengers would occasionally get held up at Coxo while a long freight got out of Cumbres and made its way off the hill. As getting a long train stopped and lined into the siding at Coxo was a sure invite for a pulled drawbar, the passenger would politely wait for the frieght to pass.
He recalled using Coxo to set out bad ordered cars. The long freights coming down from Windy Point would break knuckles or pull drawbars more often than he would have liked to remember, and the cripples got set out at Coxo.
He said he had to double a few trains up to Coxo from down near Hamilton Point if the sanders gave up. The climb from Hamilton Point to Coxo is about the toughest part of the hill. From Coxo to Cumbres the grade is a little easier. If you made Coxo, you had it whipped.
In the winter, when the snow was drifting, Coxo was a good place to stop and move the helper up front. The train would be left behind while the two engines bucked the drifts on Windy Point together, got water at the top, then backed down to get the train. No mention is made whether the helper went back to the rear. I would guess not.
