As many of you know I am retired from the San Francisco Maritime Park.

A lot of British flag sailing ships carried railroad rail cargos to the West. There is a hatch in the Ship Balclutha called the railroad hatch; although as far as I know she never carried a cargo of rails. The cargos of rails paid better than cargos of coal which was the other outward cargo. The ships loaded grain in San Francisco and later the Pacific Northwest.

Ted Miles, retired but still interested.
