I became good friends with retired D&RGW engineer Frank Wright. Frank started on the D&RGW in 1914 and ran there until 1954. I asked Frank about all the silver paint on Gunnison based engines and he said the roundhouse manager took a lot of pride in their work and keep the crews busy keeping the engines clean and well maintained.
