I remember when that picture was taken. I'm pretty sure it was at the end of the governors run when we got to Antonito. What amazed me was how the tail of the wye moved back and forth about a foot when the engine was turned around. Rich Braden and I hired on with the railroad the same day--we were high school buddies on summer vacation. Right after the Governors run I qiut the RR and went back to college--Rich made a career out of steam.
Bernie Watts came from the navy and went to work about a year? after the governors run. I always came back to Chama to see Rich and help out. That's when I met Bernie. We had great fun in the evenings with Mike Carr's homade speeder. We would go to the top of the pass and push off without the engine running--coasting all the way. The first guy to grab the brake handle was the chicken!
This fun lasted until Sid backed over it with his locomotive!
