JP,

All 3 classes of English Electric had the tube cowcatchers or "pilots" as you call 'em(down here the pilot was the guy who let you in/out of the yard, or in loco, another ED guiding you learning the road).

The DE came first in '51-'52 at 660HP, 12,700lbs TE, 55mph first used on log trains smiling smiley Dual desk controls. Became our Heavy Shunters and had stepboards fitted.

The "first" real Mainline loco was the DF of '54 at 1500HP. 38,500lbs TE 2C-C2 (4-6-6-4)wheel arrangement thumbs up 60mph

The NZR had a change of heart and doubled the 2nd order with half-pint Units in '55 with the DG at 750HP, 26,000lbs TE. A-1-A A-1-A. Some were classed as DH and had higher 29,000lbs TE. 60mph
