I have given away some pretty rare spikes from our local narrow gauge to friends, and one of the fellows painted his black. SACRILEGE!!!!!! But then it’s his spike now and he can do whatever he likes
.
I tend to wire wheel them which takes off any crud and superficial rust/scaling, leaving them both original and presentable. So knowing some folks may not have the tools etc, that would be my preference. Takes about thirty seconds per spike if you have an assembly line going, so it’s really not a big deal unless you’re doing hundreds. And they’ll make less mess in your gift shop if that’s where they’ll be sold.
As far as a suggested selling price, I purchased a spike from the WW&F folks and I think it was $10. It looks to have been wire wheeled, and fits right in!
Cheers all,
Ralph
PS
A very generous Forum member saw my post and will be sending a Greer spike, and I thank them very very much.
