RGS 42 Question

I was looking at some pictures of C-17s today and found some photos of RGS #42 when she came to the RGS as D&RG #420. When comparing photos of her later years to these, I noticed she had a different smokebox door before she went to the RGS:

Does anyone know what happened to her original smokebox door and why it had to be replaced?
