Continuing our trip:
Here's a view about 3/4 mile along the trail:
On the right is Painted Rock:
This was painted white as a navigation aid in the days of sailing. Supposedly a ship's captain could use a bearing on this rock as well as another landmark to judge his location in relation to the Golden Gate.
The tree growth now obscures this rock...
For those interested in a more detailed history of the Ferries and Cliff House, I'd suggest this book:
It contains an entire chapter on this railroad and most of the photos I'm duplicating came from this book.
