If I recall it was said that it had a lot more than just boiler issues. As in the only really good part below the bell was the cylinder saddle that was replaced in the late 1920's (1927?).
As to strength, C-17 engines were rated at 140 tons, Hermosa to Silverton - about the same as #315. Make of that what you will.
I also recall being told by a D&S employee, ca. 1983, that the plan at the time she was bought was to use her on Cascade turns with only 4 or 5 cars.
The only thing in the above I'm sure is a fact is the 140 tons, btw.
