This is a great photo! You can make out the skewed bevel angle of the gears to account for the pinion shaft passing over the axle shafts, and now I better understand how the pinion shaft was kept in position. It basically rides on blocks that are supported by the axle shafts. Sure does make for a flexy truck that can accommodate very uneven track.
