Chris: The Joseph Collier photo that you posted says it was taken between 1890 - 1900?. The citation says that the post is MP 312, but when I zoom in on it there doesn't appear to be any markings on the post. Also the current MP 312 is about.3 of a mile to the east of that point, realignment? This photo was also taken where the westbound SJ got hit by an avalanche in February, 1948.

Earl came the closest. I took the photo I posted in 2007 and it's of a cut on the west side of Phantom Curve at about MP 312.5. The weird lines you pointed out are UFO contrails!!
