The Mt. Lyell railway out of Queenstown in the same general region (Western Tasmania) runs on the state standard 3 foot 6 inch gauge but similar in scenery and difficulty of the terrain. It was known for having sections using the ABT rack system. The route operates today as the West Coast Wilderness Railway, having undergone a restoration similar to that of the Georgetown Loop.
Tasmania is also something of a footnote or trivia item for narrow gauge enthusiasts. It represents one of the few regions where narrow gauge defeated an older established wide gauge railway, in this case the 5 foot 3 gauge Launceston & Western which eventually had to re-gauge its route to 3 foot 6 so as to function with the expanding 3 foot 6 gauge state network.
