All this reminds me of my first (and thankfully not the last!) ride behind live steam, it was UP 8444 Denver to Laramie and back in 1977 - I was leaning out of one of the Dutch doors and caught something in my eye. I knew it was an oil-fired loco so it must've been sanding the flues that caused it. Thankfully a kindly person also on the train extricated the culprit from my eye and I was able to continue enjoying the experience.

Then I found the narrow gauge in a few years and enjoyed seeing our daughter napping in one of the D&S open cars and slowly get covered with ashes and soot!
