At the end of the run mean what, please? Daily when back in the terminal, or would it be done out on the road at certain water stops or stations. It seems like that pile of cinders would not help the draft.

When I read of cinders being put on the tracks as ballast I assumed it was direct from the firebox grates, a natural shaking down from rough riding locomotives. As your basic foamer, and one living in oil burner country at that, I never understood the problems that occur. How did the companies dispose of this collection?
