This photo gives a better idea of the amount of cinders that can accumulate in the smoke box at the end of a run when the smoke box is not equipped with a self-clearing front end. I understand that some tourist railroads, such as the Puffing Billy in Australia, have removed the Master Mechanic equipment from their Baldwin engines to protect the passengers riding in open air cars.
