I hope I don’t sound argumentative with this but, having crossed this country (east-west and north-south) at least a couple of dozen times, one can see and appreciate the varying landscapes quite well from the interstates. However, you do need to leave them behind to get to “know” the localities.
Personally, I drove more relaxed while on limited access roads. Everyone is going in the same direction and, there are no blind curves. You can pass (or let someone pass you) far more safely and, having been T-boned twice,
there is no cross traffic. For someone used to driving on ‘the other side’ and visiting this country for the first time that is a plus.
