I know others are suggesting that you avoid driving to Narrow Gauge Country but, If you have the time and can afford it, by all means see the USA in your Chevrolet (or rented whatever). It's about 1200 miles from Chicago on hi speed (70-75 mph) highways. The plains of America's mid west have an attraction all their own and while at first glance they may remind you of a billiard table they are more "rolling". They are a large part of the American scene and once you reach Narrow Gauge Country you will see plenty of mountainous country. BTW since you will be driving for the most part on interstate divided highways, there is no wrong side
.
America is a large and beautiful country (with some ugly thrown in for contrast). If you can manage it, drive it!. Stop at small towns along the way to stretch your legs and talk to the "locals". When you look back in the future you will be glad you did.
