Some more information on expansion & contraction.
As for DRGW Std Prac 55-L-91-A & 55-L-9-A of 1929.
My guess is this came about just because of the expansion & contraction issue.
Also believe this applied to side checks as most top checks were flange mounted.
About 10 years after the DRGW Std Prac attachment, RME answered a question in the
Feb.1939 issue with a good of explanation of expansion & contraction of injector
delivery pipes and boiler check problems.
My recollection is that George Davies was a long time New York Central Mechanical
Department boiler person who wrote for Simmons-Boardman/RME. Toward the end of
steam his Locomotive Boiler Qs&Es added the mechanical portions of locomotives.
