Further reading has convinced me that the engine pictured was almost certainly reboilered at some point, so its later appearance on the Newport & Sherman's Valley RR would not be representative of its original Pittsburgh design (which would almost certainly have included ringed domes and probably a diamond stack as well). I apologize for my misleading comments about Pittsburgh vs. Canadian locomotive design.
