I wrecked my first bug in the late 80s, rolled it. No seat-belts, I came out with no scratches, but I was pretty bruised the following day. Took the motor out and put it in another beetle that had a body like swiss cheese. I lost a vhs tape once while driving because it went through a hole under passenger seat. That car was rear-ended in 1990. Even though the car was in the shape it was, insurance wouldn't "total it" since they were becoming collectors items. A family friend offered me a motor-less VW camper for $100. I called to stop the work on the repairs at the auto shop the first day they had it, they said "oh, we're half done". 2 weeks later they finished. I was very upset, but I was 18 years old and was pretty naive about how I should have handled it. The engine made it into a 3rd beetle eventually. Soon after my grandmother lost her license and I began taking care of her 1973 Dodge Charger. It responded quite differently to the accelerator pedal than my beetles did.....
