I chased the Westside, SP ng., and DRGW ng. in my old VW, I think it was a '56....purchased used of course....no gas gauge, flat windshield, etc. On back roads the low flat bottom had a tendency to slide along on the sage brush in the center, providing a rather smooth ride but lacking in traction or positive steering control. It could be exciting. While driving up Cumbres from Chama the ignition short circuited, which was fun. I turned the ignition off but it still kept burning until I disconnected the battery. But it got quickly fixed it in Chama and I drove back to Long Beach.
