Greetings:
In the 2nd edition of "The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America", now in preparation, I plan to have a listing of steam locomotives which were put on display and later scrapped.
I have heard that the first of these was DSP&P No.24, which was sold to an unknown contractor who used it in Iowa on a project and later donated by his Widow to the Iowa State College of the Mechanical & Industrial Arts at Ames, Iowa in c.1905. It was supposedly displayed there (in derelict condition) until 1945 when it was donated for a World War Two scrap drive.
I would be interested to learn:
1) Is this a true story?
2) The name of the contractor or construction company and/or the Widow's name.
3) Date of donation to the college.
4) Date it was scrapped.
Thank you in advance for any help!
