Just to be clear, you're talking about the UP regime in the 1880's here, right? ISTR reopening taking place in late April or so most years, until they just plain quit in 1890.

Probably lost as much just on the number of engines & crews required. Alpine was an engine eater, when C&S closed it for good they stored 21 out of 48 narrow gauge engines! (all of classes B-4-A & B-4- 4-engine mixeds, begod!
