I guess we’re piling on here, but the train from London and the trip up the Cambrian coast once you hit Wales is spectacular. The Barmouth Bridge, cliffside running, Harlech Castle, et al. Due to flights from where we are, another option is from Manchester. Stay in Conwy overnight and see the castle there, then take a morning train down the valley line to Blaenau Ffestiniog, where you transfer onto the 2’ gauge steam train. What better way to arrive in Porthmadog! Being early in the year the FR won’t have as many trains as in the summer, so just confirm their connection lines up.
If you were spending a couple weeks in Wales a car might be worth it, but if you’re only seeing a few specific things that are accessible by railway, the trains are frequent and the best way to see the countryside. And hey, they’re trains!
Cheers,
