I agree with Olaf 100%. We traveled from London to Porthmadog by train in 2017 and I highly recommend it. The Cambrian Line is a spectacular ride, and a great introduction to the Welsh landscape. (Note that it also serves Tywyn, home of the Tallylyn Railway, as well as Welshpool for the Welshpool & Llanfair.) Then when you finally arrive in Porthmadog, the Royal Sportsman Hotel is literally just down the street from the station.
